Main Street revitalization continues to be a focus of Central Houston, Inc.
Central Houston worked with downtown constituents to design Main Street Square, a three-block pedestrian plaza in the 900-1100 blocks of Main Street. The Square includes a massive fountain with 13 “jump jets” which shoot water 40 feet high, and 39 smaller “pop jets,” art work, canopies, flowering plants, and more. The square contributes to a revitalized retail atmosphere and provides a relaxing and social space to the changing downtown environment. Most of the funding for this $8.9 million project was raised by Central Houston from private donations. (2002-2004; enhancements ongoing)
- Partner with other civic entities in creating the Main Street Coalition and preparing strategic plan and urban design master plan for the 7.5-mile corridor downtown to Reliant Park (1998- present)
- Facilitated master plan for renewal of Main Street including events (ice rink), retail leasing, capital improvements (Main Street Square), and redevelopment of key structures (1995-ongoing)
- "Proud Street"- five-year project to improve street fixtures, add landscaping, and maintain improvements (1987-1992; ongoing maintenance provided by Houston Downtown Management District)
